It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to an extraordinary artist, visionary, and beacon of love, Anne Mimi Sammis. On June 27, 2023, Mimi peacefully passed away in Narragansett, RI, concluding her valiant battle against cancer. She was 82 years old, leaving behind a prodigious legacy that continues to touch countless lives.
Throughout her career, Mimi achieved remarkable milestones. Her work was showcased internationally, including a groundbreaking exhibition at the United Nations in 1999, titled “One Thousand Years of Peace.” Renowned figures like Dr. Robert Muller, Chancellor of the United Nations’ University of Peace, have praised Mimi’s work for embodying love, peace, forgiveness, hope, and vision. In 2002, through a commission from the Archbishop of Canterbury to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee, Mimi created the sculpture “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands,” on permanent display at Lambeth Palace, London.
Mimi’s public sculptures have become landmarks in Rhode Island and beyond. From the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery to Narragansett Beach, her artistic expressions, such as “Dance of Peace” and “Dancing on the Waves,” continue to inspire and uplift those who encounter them.
For nearly 20 years, Family Service of Rhode Island has presented the Brighter Futures Award – a framed print of Mimi’s original pastel “Three Dancing Children,” which depicts a joyous family surrounded by bright light. We will sadly miss Mimi at this year’s award event, but will always remember and honor her spirit of love, kindness and generosity, along with her undying fervor for a brighter future for all.
